On the road again:
Health insurance while traveling

Craig McAvinue By Geoffrey Mann- Nov 10, 2023

A health insurance policy has limitations, of course, one of the most significant being where it covers you. The more and further you travel, the more important it becomes to learn the extent of your policy benefits. A misunderstanding can have serious consequences.

Coverage area

All policies define your coverage geographically, by country. If your destination country is on the list, you have the same coverage there as you do here. If so, think about whether your annual coverage limit makes sense where you’re headed. An annual benefits limit of USD 250,000 might make sense in Vietnam but not in the USA, for example. If you travel a lot, you might consider expanding your coverage area.

Emergency coverage

If you’ll be traveling outside your coverage area, most policies will provide some benefits to cover you for emergencies (only) that happen during your trip. There are often lots of limitations on this type of coverage, so it’s best not to rely on it 100%.

Emergency Coverage

Proof of insurance

Demonstrating that you have coverage is generally simple with a certificate from the insurer. There are mixed reports from travelers whether they had to show proof of insurance or not.

National Health Service et al

For those lucky enough to be heading home to a country that provides its citizens with free or subsidized healthcare, make sure you understand any restrictions that might apply if you’re no longer a resident.

Travel health insurance

A good travel health insurance policy might provide the additional coverage you need. Be careful about the travel insurance associated with some credit cards, banks, airlines, etc. – most of these policies have very limited health coverage. Tenzing generally recommends these providers listed on our website.

Longer-term options

If your plans involve living outside your home country for an extended period, whether in a single location or many, it’s probably time to start thinking about a new or additional health insurance policy. We can help, of course.

Friends and family

These principles apply equally to friends and family heading this way to visit. A significant accident or illness in this region will cost more than most suspect, plus you’ll typically need to pay up front even if your policy includes coverage here. Then you’ll need to submit a claim for reimbursement, with all the paperwork hassles you can imagine.

Travel with family

Bottom line, don’t assume your current policy will provide the same protection while traveling as it does while you’re sitting in your living room. Take a few minutes to understand its pros and cons in light of your travel plans. If you need to, take action to ensure you’ll have the protection you want, while you wander.

Happy trails!
