Frequently Asked Questions

Global Primary Medical Insurance (GPMI) is designed for expatriates, local nationals worldwide (excluding Chinese nationals residing in China), and long-term international residents, with new entry available up to age 74 for most plans and up to 99 for Full Medical Underwriting. Once accepted, coverage is guaranteed for life. Dependents are covered up to age 25, and child-alone policies are also available.

GPMI, available in tiers from Bronze to Platinum, provides extensive inpatient and day-patient medical care, including surgical treatments, diagnostics, and mental wellness support, with optional benefits like maternity and dental coverage; higher tiers offer enhanced benefits and services such as telemedicine. For short-term travel, GlobeHopper covers emergency medical expenses, evacuations, and offers additional benefits like trip interruption and accidental death, ensuring peace of mind for travelers worldwide.

Generally, IMG ALC can place business in almost any country globally through a trust in Bermuda, with the exceptions of standard sanctioned countries and Bermuda itself. They can insure any local national worldwide, with the sole exception of Chinese nationals residing in China. This means you have the flexibility to choose a plan that covers you where you live, work, and travel internationally.

IMG ALC offers different approaches to covering pre-existing medical conditions:

  • Full Medical Underwriting: You provide your complete medical history, and IMG ALC will review it to determine what terms they can offer. This may result in certain pre-existing conditions being excluded or subject to a premium increase.
  • Moratorium Underwriting: This is a common option where treatment for any medical condition you had in the five years prior to joining the plan is initially excluded. After two continuous years on the policy without experiencing symptoms, receiving treatment, or taking medication for that condition, it may become eligible for coverage. However, some conditions that require continuous medical advice or medication may never be covered under this method.
  • Bronze Plan: This entry-level GPMI plan generally excludes coverage for any pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Bronze Plus and higher tiers (Silver, Gold, Platinum): These plans may allow for pre-existing conditions to be included, subject to underwriting approval. These plans also cover chronic conditions, with varying levels of benefits for acute exacerbations and routine management depending on the tier. For example, Platinum and Premier plans may cover routine management of kidney dialysis, and Gold and Platinum plans may cover HIV/AIDS treatment up to certain limits.

For GPMI plans, IMG ALC uses a “pooled renewals” system. This means that all members typically receive a standard annual increase based on the overall performance of the insurance pool, rather than increases being tied directly to your individual claims history. For example, as of April 1st, 2023, the medical rate increase was 5% for Europe Only and Worldwide Excluding USA coverage, and 6.5% for Worldwide coverage.

With IMG ALC, you won’t always need to pay upfront and then claim reimbursement. They offer direct billing arrangements with a network of medical providers.

  • Direct Billing: IMG ALC has a proprietary network called International Provider Access (IPA) with over 45,000 physicians and facilities worldwide. When you seek treatment within this network, some facilities may bill IMG directly for the services, which can reduce your out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Within the USA: If you’re in the U.S., IMG plans often utilize a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) network. Using providers within this network can help reduce your out-of-pocket costs.
  • Pre-authorization: For certain treatments, especially inpatient procedures, pre-authorization may be required. This process helps ensure coverage is in place before you receive treatment.
  • MyIMG Portal: You can use the MyIMG online portal to search for providers, manage your account, and submit claims.

Yes, you can typically spread out your IMG ALC premium payments. While policies are annual contracts, they often allow for installment payments, commonly offering monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual frequencies. It’s important to remember that choosing installments usually implies responsibility for the entire year’s premium.

Yes, you can absolutely set up a group plan for your company with IMG ALC. They offer tailored international private medical insurance solutions designed for corporate clients and their employees, with flexible underwriting options including Medical History Disregarded (MHD) terms often available for groups as small as five employees. These plans come with competitive pricing, and a significant benefit is the guaranteed continuation of cover for employees who leave the group scheme, ensuring seamless protection for your global workforce.
